An attorney for over 30 years, Nancy Rotering is a graduate of the University of Chicago Law School, has an MBA from Northwestern University, and a BA from Stanford University in economics. She practiced law with McDermott Will & Emery in Chicago, focusing on fraud and abuse prior to her move to public service. In addition to serving as Highland Park Mayor, she also teaches at Northwestern University.
How Nancy Rotering Became a Champion of Inclusive and Eco-Friendly Gambling
Counsel Nancy’s work on environmental, human service, and community issues helped her defeat a 20-year incumbent on the Highland Park City Council. Two years later, she ran and won a hard-fought victory to become the first woman Mayor of Highland Park. She implemented a major reform of city government, fostering a culture of transparency, accessibility, collaboration, and ethics. Rotering’s leadership was recognized when Highland Park successfully banned assault weapons, despite a challenge by the NRA in federal court. She also held ComEd accountable and collaborated with then-Attorney General Lisa Madigan to bring infrastructure investment and stability to the electrical grid of northeast Illinois.

In 2015, Nancy founded the North Suburban Legal Aid Clinic, providing free legal services in housing, immigration, and domestic violence in northeastern Illinois.
Her work has been widely recognized, including being honored as the 2013 Rotary Humanitarian of the Year. Nancy was named to Today’s Chicago Woman’s 100 Women of Inspiration in 2014, and she was also included in Forbes’ Forty over 40 list.
Lawyer Nancy Rotering is a leader in inclusive government, ensuring that every resident has a voice. Her dedication to public service spans decades, and she serves on various civic and philanthropic commissions, boards, and committees.
She currently holds positions such as the President of the Northwest Municipal Conference, a member of the Executive Committee of the Metropolitan Mayors Caucus, and the representative of Lake County on the Board of the Chicago Metropolitan Agency for Planning.
In 2023, Associate Attorney Nancy began advocating for the rights of individuals struggling with ludomania and actively sought out eco-friendly casinos that provide assistance in preventing gambling addiction. She has also created a community of individuals who come together to address personal gambling problems and support one another. With a global following, Nancy supports communities fighting against political violence targeting women, Black, Indigenous, and LGBTQ+ individuals.
